Certified Criminal Record Checks are Becoming the Norm for Employers and Agencies Across Canada

There are many reasons as to why someone would need to get a certified criminal record verification completed by the RCMP.    It has become common practice for employers in Canada to request a certified criminal records check for all employees. Both potential employees and current employees are being affected by this.

With increasing regularity, employers are screening potential employees during the application phase and those with criminal records are being refused jobs based on their criminal record, no matter how minor or how long ago the charges occurred.   Industries ranging from healthcare to education to the security sector or service sector and more are all requiring record checks for new employees.

In the past few years it is also become increasingly common for employers to request criminal record checks for ALL of their employees, no matter how long they have been with the company.  Individuals who have worked the same job for more than 10 years are now being asked to provide a certified record check in accordance with new company policies.  Employees with criminal records are being let go.

Any individual with a criminal record in Canada will require a Canadian pardon in order to gain employment, maintain their employment or be bondable if they wish to work for, or already work for, a company with a no-criminal record policy for their employees.  In some cases employees have a matter of months, or even weeks, to provide their record check, the same goes for potential employees.  This being the case, it is advised that individuals with a criminal record apply for a pardon as soon as they become eligible.

A certified criminal record check is needed for the following:

Adoptions – Canadian and International
Foreign travel – Visas, U.S. Waivers, Border Crossing
Employment – federal, provincial, municipal governments; private industry; Canadian police forces
Employment for various work sectors
Application to become bonded
Volunteer work
Applications for immigration to Canada
Applications for Canadian Citizenship
Applications to obtain criminal record to apply for a Pardon
Applications to obtain criminal record to apply for a US Entry Waiver
Name change
Permanent residency in foreign countries (all countries except Canada)

An individual with a criminal record will require a Canadian pardon in order to have a clear criminal record required for anything on the list above.  A Canadian pardon can take anywhere from 18 to 24 months to complete for an individual doing the application on their own.  For those using a legal service, such as Express Pardons , the timeline is significantly shorter. With Express Pardons, an application for a pardon can be completed in as little as 6 months.
