How to Forgive Yourself – No Matter What I Have Done?

We have all done things in our lives we wish we had never done. Some of those things cause us sadness as we think about them, while other things cause us such regret we can hardly live with ourselves and we find it difficult, if not impossible, to forgive ourselves for it. Perhaps you know what I am talking about. You are so ashamed of something that you’ve done that you cannot believe for a minute you could or should forgive yourself. Instead, you feel all you can do is spend the rest of your life paying penance for it, in hopes that will remove the oppressive burden of guilt you live with every day.

Regardless of your past wrongdoing, you can be released from the burden you now carry, caused by your own unforgiveness. You may have sought the forgiveness of God for what you’ve done, but if you have failed to forgive yourself, you will remain in a place of defeat, even bondage, until you choose to obey the Word of God and forgive yourself.

Often, when we look at the original meaning and intent of of a word, we can better understand how to apply it to our lives. This is true as we look at the Greek word for forgiveness which means “to free fully, i.e. literally relieve, release, dismiss or let die, pardon, divorce from, depart, dismiss, let go, loose, put (send) away, release, set at liberty.”

To all who ask, God offers His gift of forgiveness, meaning; He fully frees, releases, dismisses and pardons us from the debt and guilt of our sin. He sets us – body, soul and spirit – at liberty. However, he doesn’t stop there. He then, tells us to forgive others, as well as ourselves, in the same way we have been forgiven, promising to give us the power, by His Holy Spirit, to do so.

How does one go about actually forgiving him or herself? There is no formula but the following suggestions may be helpful.

First, understand that one needs to make the choice to forgive one’s self based on God’s instruction to do so. Forgiveness is a choice and an act of the will is necessary to make it happen.

Leviticus 19:18 says “…you shall love your neighbor as yourself…” Loving yourself is a command of God and love always includes forgiveness.

Second, if you haven’t already, ask God to forgive you for the wrongs you have done. It is important to do this prior to working through forgiving yourself. Remember, He is waiting to forgive you and will graciously do so, if you ask Him.

Nehemiah 9:17 “… But you are a God of forgiveness, Gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in loving kindness.”

Then, sit down quietly with God and ask His Holy Spirit to show you the things that you have not let go of or forgiven yourself for. Write it all down on a piece of paper. Be sure and put down all the specifics – list the names of people you hurt and the ways in which you hurt them. (No one will see this paper.)

From there express how you feel because of what you did; Are you angry at yourself? Do you feel ashamed? Unworthy? Be very honest, for God knows it all already. This is a good place to release all the emotions you’ve carried or tried to deny.

Now, make the choice to forgive yourself as God has forgiven you. Literally release, dismiss, let die, pardon, let go, loose, put (send) away, release and set yourself at liberty” from the wrong you are guilty of. Put your wrongdoing into His hands and ask Him to heal your emotional wounds and enable you to move forward without regrets, let go of the past and start fresh!

Finally destroy your list and throw it in the trashcan as a visual reminder that the guilt of what you’ve done has been forgiven and carried away, gone forever.

Now, go and experience the healing, peace and freedom that is yours to enjoy as you praise God for His power of forgiveness.

Yeah, I hate Fiscally Liberal people too. Damn those Neo-Cons and their Liberal economic policies… Liberalism is ruining us.

You do understand a “NEO-CON” is a fiscally LIBERAL conservative, right?

  • future:

Because he told the KGB who a CIA agent was to get back at Cheney’s enemies?

  • More fed up then you:

Because the charges against him were totally bogus.
She was never a ‘secret agent’ that was total garbage and her ‘outing’ was done by her own husband anyway and he was never even charged.
    Total NAZILIB hypocrisy.

    To actually answer your question…

Because somehow they have turned the world upside down, and committing a crime is honorable. Or, being convicted of same is a miscarriage of justice.

Dick Cheney: “Scooter Libby is one of the most capable and honorable men I’ve ever known,” Mr Cheney said. “He’s been an outstanding public servant throughout his career. He was the victim of a serious miscarriage of justice, and I strongly believe that he deserved a presidential pardon.”

Also he wanted a pardon so Bush “could claim the war on terrorism as his greatest legacy only if they defended at all costs the men and women” involved, so Cheney argued that he didn’t want anyone “left on the battlefield”.

Edit: @more fed up: In 2007, a court filing by Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald indicated that Plame was “covert” when her name became public in July 2003, shown by her declassified CIA employment history.

  • Jimbo:

The rationale was that Libby had done nothing wrong and was prosecuted in a governmental prosecutorial over reach. The liberals in the Justice Dept. wanted their pound of flesh and got it with Libby. It was a total miscarriage of justice and a waste of the taxpayers money. I know YOU disagree with it but it wasn’t your azz sitting in jail for no reason.

  • tom:

The reason the leak occurred was because Cheney ordered it. Cheney didn’t want to “leave anyone on the battle field.” Cheney is corrupt to his core, and committed an act of treason by leaking her name. It was simple revenge for her husband’s truthful investigation into the Niger-Uranium fraud that was being sold to us by neocon criminals like Bush, Cheney, & Co.
