Interview With Clothing Expert – Andy Gilchrist on how Men Should Dress

Conversation between Adwin Ang & Andy Gilchrist
Good day everyone and Welcome to our Interview with Andy Gilchrist!

Adwin:

Hi Andy, first of all I would like to thank you for taking some time off from your busy schedule for this online interview. I have read the materials from your CD; you bet they are highly informative products. Especially you use charts and picture to illustrate. Also it is a very good and fast reference guide.

My first question is Andy, what have made you decide to come up with a website’s that focus on men’s fashion?

Andy:

It was an extension of my natural and long time interest in men’s clothing. I started out at the monitor of a men’s fashion Forum that was connected to Men’s Health magazine and liked the idea. I then decided to write a book on men’s clothes, (The Encyclopaedia of Men’s Clothes) which took me two years, and the website was a vehicle to sell the book.

Adwin:

I have read and saw the huge number of topics which you covered on menswear both on your website and CD Rom e-Book “The Encyclopaedia of Men’s Clothes”, the information really amaze me on what I have missed out all these years.

Where or how did you develop your fashion sense? Any special training or courses one need to take?

Andy:

Some of it came from my father, who living in the middle of Kansas (USA) and doing oil exploration work. But he was always interested in men’s fashion and the quality of the various brands of shoes, suits, shirts, etc.
And honestly I think it somewhat out of insecurity!! Not being born the best looking guy in the world (don’t argue!) I realized that image and looks was important and that I needed to make myself look as good in public as possible.

Adwin:

It occurred to me men in my country aren’t really dress to impress or know their dressing sense but dress according to what they think is suitable for the occasion.

For example: Some men would wear a polo-shirt or jeans for Wedding dinner. They find it more comfortable which is obviously

Where can we obtain the information on latest trends in men’s fashion? Any websites which are your favourites?

Andy:

Unlike women’s clothing, most men’s clothing (even for the most formal occasions) are intricately comfortable. Women are always searching for comfortable shoes, while men would not stand (pardon the pun) for shoes that didn’t fit well and feel good.

There is also a world wide cultural (or sexual) mind set that men are not suppose to dress well. They are “supposed” to be unkempt, rugged individuals. But if you study every male animal species you note that the male is the more colourful!

It’s good to keep up on the current trends, but not necessarily to go crazy for each fad that comes along. The value of men’s clothing is that they change fashion rarely since the styles have been evolving down through a 100 years to something that fits men’s body types, activities and makes most men look great. Look at formalwear – every man looks exceptionally handsome in the classic (no frills, no updates, no changes) basic tuxedo.
The “acceptable” colors for business (Navy or grey suit, white or blue shirt, etc.) compliment most gentlemen’s skin, hair and eye colors.

Adwin:

You mention about the “Rule of Seven” a few times in your Men’s clothes Encyclopedia. What exactly must we watch out on the ‘7 rules’?

Andy:

Just to restate that there is a “Rule of Seven” in women’s fashion that applies to men as well. The “rule” states that there should be no more than seven points of interest on your body at any one time!

The theory is that too much visual stimulation detracts from the total look.

Points of interest could be a watch, pocket square, bright tie, blazer buttons, braces, belt buckle, cuff links, fashion glasses, facial hair, vest, anything that could draw attention to that item.

So if you’re wearing an exceptional pair of cufflinks you don’t want to overpower them by adding too many other visual excitement.
When others are visually overloaded they tend to repel you. The mistake when you have too many points of interest is that the look is loud, busy and discordant (not harmonic). Too many patterns make you look like a clown.

Adwin:

The section which I find it most interesting is on casual wear.” DON’T BE A CASUAL CASUALTY!” which you mention a lot of people have misunderstood the meaning of casual dressing. I do agree and myself have always misunderstood it at the long.

What are the different types of casual wear and how should we wear to address the word “Casual wear” on our invitation card?

Andy:

Part of the problem is that the person sending out the invitation has no idea what the classifications of dress are and thus confuses the guests. There are 5 classifications of dressy and 5 classifications of casual and they all depend on the occasion. It’s easy to get them all mixed up.

Adwin:

Ehm…Andy, as you know I am running a blog site on cuff links. My next question is in general how should we match our cuff links to the type of cuff shirts we wear, in terms of shirts and cuffs material?

Andy:

You can coordinate cuff links by colour with the rest of your ensemble for that harmonic impression.

You may want to coordinate the metal colour with your watch and ring, so that everything, for example, is gold, but that’s not really necessary. Many watches contain both silver and gold and colour mixing is not scorned.
Traditionally gold was appropriate for day, and silver for evening, but with the advent of a more casual approach both are interchangeable. Silver goes with blue, black or grey, and gold is best with earth tones.

Adwin:

About cuff links care, how should we store them to prevent scratches and should we clean them often for cuff links made of stainless steel?

Andy:

Store your cuff links in a felt lined jewellery case or use any other method that keeps the links from coming in contact with each other to prevent scratching.

If you don’t have a jewellery case just keep them in the felt lined box they were packed in when you purchased them. Of if they didn’t come in a box (where did you say you got these cuff links?) try storing them in a soft cloth in a drawer.

Adwin:

As you know, there are many type of cuff links in the market. For a person who intend to buy his first pair of cuff links what should he look out for? Is there such a thing as the main categories of cuff types?

Andy:

STYLES of CUFF LINKS:(from most elegant to least dressy)

Double-faced are links with two identical faces attached with a metal link. You push one face through the “button” holes of the cuff. These are the dressiest.Chain links — A chain attaches the double-faced links.
Snap on are made up of two separate pieces that snap together.

Push-through — This style has a bulbous or globular end opposite the showy side, which is pushed through the cuff holes. Also see Silk Knots below.

Hinged back — This type has a bar, which can be aligned perpendicular to the link then opened parallel, after it’s pushed though the cuff, to secure the link in place.

Stirrup are cufflinks that wrap around the shirt cuff. Some consider these garish.

Silk knots have two knots linked together with and made of silk; one of the knots is pushed through the cuff hole to hold the cuff together. Silk knots are the least dressy style.

Adwin:

I have seen a few men’s cosmetics store in Singapore but might be catering to a small group of people. But seems to me men nowadays are more concern of the way they dress themselves and they are more willing to spend on accessories.

Do you think men’s fashion wear will continue to be more popular for the next 5 years or so?

Andy:

Absolutely. Men are realizing the importance to their daily lives of looking good. A good impression helps with business, love life, family and all relationships (getting through airport security!!) There will be a boom in men’s cosmetics, quality and classic clothing (some with new high tech fabrics) and a greater willingness to spend money on items that make us look good.

Adwin :

Andy, having been in the men’s fashion industry for many years, what are the common problems that are face by men nowadays in term of their dressing?

Andy:

The casual dressing era was welcomed by many men but then it became apparent that putting all those elements together properly wasn’t so easy. Certainly not as easy as putting a suit (one element) together with a shirt, tie, and shoe and a belt that matched. It’s more difficult to dress in casual mode and look good.

Adwin:

Coming back to the topic of cuff links, do you have any resources to recommend where readers here can draw information from?

Andy:

There must be a good history or a book on cuff links out there. If not, Adwin, let’s write one!

Adwin:

From our last email exchanged, you are launching your a set of cuff links, do you intend to go into customisation cuff links for the Online community? How can they reach you?

Andy:

SmartTurnout, in the UK, in the UK, One of the sponsor’s on AskAndyAboutclothes.com agreed to design a pair of chain style (double faced) cuff links with the Ask Andy hanger on one side and some nice blue tone stripes on the other. (so you could wear the ask Andy side out for Ask Andy get-together events and the other side out for day to day wear. I should have some news (photos, prices) very soon.

Adwin:Once again, thank you, Andy!, for sharing with us your knowledge on clothing’s and await to see more of your exciting tips and cuffs launches.
Take care and have a nice day!

Andy: Thank you Adwin! Really good thoughtful questions. Good luck on the great website you’ve started on cufflinks. I really like the layout and the information there is excellent.

Some super rare footage from USA Network’s “Thursday Night NBA Basketball” broadcast March 20, 1980. Great insight into early 80’s pro hoops. The press account had attendance at only 1138 (but that might have been a typo -11138?) at the Pontiac Silverdome. This game is notable because it is one of just a few times that Pete Maravich started for Boston. Four of the Celtic’s five starters are Hall of Famers and Top 50 players. I believe that is the last time that happened in the NBA. Maravich 20 points. What You Should Know About Domestic Abuse

What is domestic abuse?

There are many forms of domestic abuse, ranging from screaming threats to pushing and shoving. Contrary to what many women think, abuse isn’t just physical battering.

Domestic abuse may include emotional abuse, economic abuse, sexual abuse, using children, threats, using male privilege, intimidation, isolation and a variety of other behaviors used to maintain fear, intimidation and power. In all cultures, the perpetrators are most commonly the men of the family.
Nearly one in three adult women experiences at least one physical assault by a partner during adulthood, according to the American Psychological Association in a 1996 report.

Domestic abuse does not discriminate against race, age and socioeconomic background. No specific type of woman is more prone to being battered by her partner, nor is one type of woman completely safe from abuse.

What Victims of Domestic Violence Need to Know?

The abuse is not your fault
You don’t deserve to be abused
You can’t change someone who is abusive
Staying in the relationship won’t stop the abuse
With time the abuse always gets worse
If you stay, make a plan to keep yourself safe when the abuse happens again
You CAN Fight Back!

Signs of Domestic Abuse

Acts of domestic violence generally fall into one or more of these categories:

Physical battering — The abuser’s physical attacks or aggressive behavior can range from bruising to murder.

Sexual abuse — Physical attack by the abuser is often accompanied by or culminates in, sexual violence.

Psychological battering — The abuser’s psychological or mental violence can include constant verbal abuse, harassment, excessive possessiveness, isolating the woman from friends and family, and depriving her of food, money, clothes, and destroying her personal property.
Be Prepared!

If you have been assaulted, you can report it to the police.

The Criminal Code says that assault is a criminal offence. The Code describes three types of assault and sets maximum penalties (called sentences) for each type.

The three types of assault are:

Simple assault (most common assault). Examples are slapping, pushing or shoving, punching or threatening that he or she will harm you or your children.

Assault with a weapon or causing bodily harm. Examples are an assault where you are beaten with a baseball bat or an assault where you get a black eye or broken bones.

Aggravated assault is an assault where your life is endangered or you are wounded, maimed or disfigured. Examples are where the offender threatens to kill you or where your injuries from the assault leave you with a limp or scars.

Warning signs of an Abusive Relationship

Are you frightened of your partner’s temper?
Are you often compliant because you are afraid to hurt your partner’s feelings or are afraid of your partner’s anger?
Do you have the urge to “rescue” your partner when your partner is in trouble?
Do you find yourself apologizing to others for your partner’s behavior when you are treated badly?
Have you been hit, kicked, shoved, or had things thrown at you by your partner when he was jealous or angry?
Do you make decisions about activities and friends according to what your partner wants or how your partner will react?
Do you drink or use drugs to dull the pain or join your partner so he won’t get mad?
Do you consent easily to your partner to avoid angering him?
What are some of the warning signs?
He is extremely jealous.
Wants to know where you are at all times.
Gets upset if you spend time with friends or family.
Holds rigid expectations of male/female or adult/child role.
He expects you to meet his emotional needs.
Blames others and you for his problems.
Threatens you with violence.

There may be many other warning signs; you can phone the nearest Woman’s Shelter for further information.

Do something before it’s too late!

In your contact with any family member, the following observations should be considered clues to the possibility of wife assault.
A history of wife assault or child abuse in his family of origin.
A suspicion of child abuse or sexual abuse in his role as a father.
Abuse of drugs or alcohol.

A history of suicidal thoughts or suicide attempts.

Such characteristics as:

Impulsiveness
Temper tantrums
Jealousy
Possessiveness
Excessive dependence on his wife
Immaturity

What do we know about abusers?

They try to isolate victims from family and friends
They minimize and deny their behavior
They veil power and control over others
They blame victims
They distrust others
They often have been victims or witnessed abuse
They usually have low self-esteem
They are not in touch with their own feelings

Preparing to Leave

Keep evidence of abuse (i.e., pictures, police reports, etc.) in a safe place that is accessible to you
Know where you can go to get help; tell someone you trust what is happening to you
If you are injured, go to a doctor or emergency room and report what happened to you
Make sure that they record your visit
Make sure that your children know that it is their job to stay safe, not protect you
Keep a journal of all violent incidences
Start an individual savings account and have statements sent to a trusted friend
Acquire job skills
If you must sneak away, leave extra money, extra car keys, important papers, and extra set of clothes for yourself and children with a trusted friend (avoid family members and mutual friends who may be influenced by the abuser). Include a list of important numbers (insurance numbers, driver’s license, medication, checkbook, credit card numbers, etc.)
Practice effective Self Defense Tricks… just in case

Getting Out

What to do when leaving an abusive relationship?

If you are contemplating leaving an abusive relationship, there are some things you should do that may assist you in the process of leaving:

Make a safety plan

Write down Contact Places in the community for support
Assess your safety and that of your children
Contact a shelter for a safe place to stay
Seek interim custody
Seek a support system from family, friends and advocates
Be prepared, it helps you in a case of emergency

Make an Escape Plan

Make sure you have important documents
Save money in secret when you can
Keep extra keys and clothes with friends
Plan out all possible escape routes – doors, first floor windows, elevators, stairwells and rehearse escape routes with your children
Arrange a safe place to go such as a friend or relative who will offer unconditional support – or a motel, hotel, or shelter
Memorize the telephone number of a domestic violence shelter or call 911
Secure transportation
Work out a signal system with a friend or other family members so that they know you are in danger
Go when he is gone
Don’t tell him you are leaving
Create an excuse to slip away
Avoid arguments in areas with potential weapons such as the kitchen, garage, or in small spaces without escape routes
When leaving your home, be aware. Your spouse may try to hurt you to stop you escaping
Start to learn self defense techniques immediately!

What can you do if you have been abused?

You can, and you should talk to someone about the abuse. You can tell a family member, a friend, or your doctor. You can also talk to a support group in your community. Women’s centers and legal aid offices may be able to tell you of other services which offer help.

You can get medical help – if you have been hurt you can go to your doctor or to the Emergency Department at a hospital. If your injuries are visible you can have pictures taken. They can be used in court should you decide to lay assault charges. There are special medical and police procedures for sexual assault cases. For more information, check the Sexual Assault Department and the law in your country.

You can apply for a peace bond (in the countries where this system exist)

A peace bond or ‘recognizance’ is a paper signed by a person (such as a spouse) promising to keep the peace and be of good behavior. The peace bond may have other conditions such as requiring the person to stay away from your home or place of work. A peace bond may last for up to one year. The judge decides how long it will last.

You have to go to court to get a peace bond. You do not have to be assaulted to apply nor do you have to lay assault charges. You do have to convince the judge that you have a reasonable fear of the offender. The offender will also be in court.

Finding a Place To Go

When an assault occurs you should attempt to protect yourself. One way you might do this is to leave the home. If you don’t have a friend or family member with whom you can safely stay, and cannot afford a motel, there are shelters in your country which will accommodate you in an emergency. The RCMP or the police, if requested, will escort you out of the family home to any safe place you specify.

If there are no shelters for you in the vicinity, the Salvation Army may be able to provide temporary assistance. It might also be worthwhile to check with the local Crisis Line or Help Line which may be able to provide a list of the organizations that can help during a crisis.

National Domestic Violence/Abuse Hotline
1-800-799-SAFE
1-800-799-7233
1-800-787-3224
TDD 24-hour-a-day hotline staffed by trained counselors ready to provide immediate crisis intervention assistance to those in need. Callers can be connected directly to help in their communities, including emergency services and shelters as well as receive information and referrals, counseling and assistance in reporting abuse.
This is a vital lifeline to anyone – man, woman or child – who is a survivor of domestic violence, or who suspects that someone they know may be the victim of abuse. Calls to the hotline are confidential, and callers may remain anonymous if they wish.

Question by : How hard is it to join the RCMP?
Would I need connections of any kind? Or is it possible to join without knowing anyone with the RCMP? I know that it would be possible, but would it be nearly impossible? Also, what are the basic requirements? What are some things I should focus on before I finish high-school? Does it matter?

Just that kind of stuff.

Best answer:

Answer by T
The minimum age is 19, but very few people get in at that age. Most folks heading off to Depot are in the 23-29 zone. Recruiting is very competitive as there are a lot more applicants than positions available but it isn’t “impossible.” Check out the RCMP Recruiting site for more info.

To Get My Ex Back, What Should I Do ?

There are lots of web sites, books, blogs, forums and even courses designed to reply to the question , what should I do to get my ex back? But common sense can actually make a change after a break. And common pleasantness can go a long way toward healing your relationship.

If you are rapt with your lost relationship, wondering “what should I do to get my ex back?” then follow this easy recommendation. You may give yourself the best chance of getting back together with that special someone. Don’t play games. This is critical, but sadly many of us resort to this during breakups as it gives them a feeling of power.

If you can make the other person think that you do not care, or you care more than you actually do, you are manipulating them and that will feel great. But it will not feel superb for long. Eventually you can notice that lying and fooling the other person is not a good feeling. And anything good that occurs due to it’ll always be sullied a tiny due to the lie. Some folks play games where they pretend to be going out with someone else, or they pretend to be in love with somebody else.

This is a ploy to make the ex envious. Although it does work now and then, other times it makes the breakup permanent as it backfires.

Your ex may be so envious at the idea of you being with somebody else that they desire you back. Or they could decide that since you moved on so quickly, you do not actually care about them anyhow. You don’t have any way to know which way this ploy will work till it is too late. Do not be mean. This is true in any situation or any relationship, but occasionally the fury around a split makes us act more viciously than we usually might.

Even if you are hurt, the incontrovertible fact that you need to know is, What should I do to get my ex back? shows that you are prepared to pardon that person. If you could not, you would not desire your ex back, you’d be pleased it was over. Now, think about how you have been acting. If you were your ex, would you forecast spending time with you or speaking to you? Or would you fear each time? Do you scream and nag? Even if you are feeling like raising all types of bitching, simply do not.

Work really hard at controlling your hate and hurt, and being an individual they can miss. What should I do to get my ex back? Be on your best behavior and make your ex remember what drew them to you in the 1st place. They will remember your good points and will miss them. Then you could have an improved chance of being ready to get back along with your ex. These are only the start steps in winning your Ex back. They are the primary steps I followed when I lost the love of my life. And honestly these are not my original ideas.

I turned to T ‘Dub’ Jackson when I hadn’t got any idea on What should I do to Get My Ex Back.

Should You Consider Free Low Cholesterol Diets To Control This Medical Issue?

If you’ve just had a set of results back from your annual physical checkup, your doctor may have circled some of those figures indicating that your cholesterol levels were not acceptable. In particular, he or she might have said that your levels were not in balance and that your “bad” cholesterol was too high. In truth, only a medical professional is really able to comprehend what those figures mean, their relevance to each other and why you should be worried. However, we know now that a poorly balanced ratio of cholesterol in the bloodstream can lead to significant health problems as we go through life. This may be why you are looking for free low cholesterol diets online, to see what you can do to cut your risk.

Cholesterol is a difficult subject to absorb, to pardon the pun. Our bodies produce it and it’s also present in some of the foods that we eat. If we’re not careful it can lead to hardening of the arteries, which in turn can lead to heart problems or stroke. It’s a necessary product within our systems, but only within certain tolerances.

Each of us has a different ability to produce cholesterol naturally and some of this may be dictated by circumstances beyond your own control. However, you can definitely make a difference by cutting down on certain types of foods that you eat and avoiding anything that’s high in saturated fat or indicated cholesterol.

There are a number of free low cholesterol diets available on the web, especially if you turn to the American Heart Association and other bodies that are specifically interested in helping you achieve better heart health. Specifically, you need to look for foods that are high in fiber, as this helps to reduce the low density lipoprotein – the bad cholesterol. You should certainly avoid full fat dairy products and consider substituting oil used during cooking for something like olive oil. It’s unfortunate that some of the easier “fast” foods these days are high in trans fats, not a good indication if your cholesterol level is out of balance.

When you first get the warning back from your doctor according to the results of your lab tests, there are several things you can do. You should consider pharmaceutical drugs and statins as a first priority, and then make sure that your lifestyle changes for the better. Your diet must be programmed and planned from now on and you have to get healthy, daily exercise as well. Try and look for natural remedies to improve your cholesterol ratio wherever possible and certainly consider these options if your doctor is adamant that you should be thinking about those pharmaceuticals or statins.

There is plenty of information available on the web now about how your diet can contribute to your overall health. Remember that a healthy diet does not have to be overly expensive, but you may have to spend a little bit more time preparing those healthy foods, rather than taking the easy route.

High cholesterol might be quite hazardous for one’s future health. For precious info on free low cholesterol diets, visit http://www.naturalcholesteroltreatment.net in which we provide health secrets and also all-natural nutritional supplements that are highly effective for this kind of medical issue. Should Criminal Records Checks Be Conducted Online Or Offline?

Ever conducted a criminal records check? These are completely public documents that keep a note of the criminal records of a person. Criminal records checks are very important aspects of background searching.

Often when we conduct a background search on someone, it helps if we have some idea of the person’s criminal records as well. A background search can be performed either online or offline. You can choose any one medium depending on your convenience.

Disadvantages of Offline Searches

There are some problems if you want to conduct a criminal record check offline. First of all, you will have to write a formal application for the request of such information. This might take some time. But the main difficulty of such information is that it will not remain confidential. While if you check for this same information on the net, no one will come to know of it. It will also take much less time. There are other reasons too why you should conduct background check online.

On the net, in addition to finding criminal records, you will also find other information like whether the person is married or not, what his credit card number and social security number are, where he is employed and such other information. While in public libraries, you will have to rummage through tons of paper work only to get the records.

Offline access has other limitations. For instance, the government only allows certain “authorized individuals” to get hold of such records. As these records contain intimate personal information. Therefore, they are not handed out to every Tom, Dick and Harry.

If you try to access the databases of these agencies online, you will also have to face some restrictions. Databases of these companies are not available to everybody. Only a few privileged people have access to this data.

Solution

Commercial data providers are the best option in this case. These sites provide a lot of information on the person you are looking for. Every important detail is mentioned to the last detail. You will not only be able to conduct a criminal records check, you will also be able to know the current status of that person.

But every time it might not be possible for all of us to conduct these searches. In that case, you can pay some private sites to do all the work. You will simply have to pay the required fee and patiently wait for the incoming search results.

Criminal records checks are best conducted through paid subscriptions based sites. They don’t take much time; they are very cost effective and very convenient. You can sit in the comfort of your home and find out whether your business partner has any criminal background or not.
