Pardoning the Thanksgiving Turkey – An American Tradition

The President of the United States has the power to pardon people found guilty of crimes – to forgive the crimes, and free them from punishment. But once a year, the President issues a different kind of pardon. It goes to a U.S. resident who has committed no crimes but was meant to die – a turkey.

Every year, before Thanksgiving, one or two live turkeys are given to the White House. (In recent years, there have always been two.) At a ceremony in the Rose Garden, the President announces that these turkeys will never be killed and eaten. Then they’re sent to a farm or a park, or somewhere else they can live out their lives.

This has become an American tradition, though not a very serious one. It’s not about the ethics of eating meat. It’s done mostly to help people take their minds off their problems and relax for Thanksgiving.

The turkeys are chosen from a commercial farm. They’re usually given to the President as a gift from groups that help poultry farmers.

No one seems to know how this tradition started. Some say Abraham Lincoln’s son raised a turkey, then didn’t want to kill it – so his father pardoned it. Some say President Harry S Truman was the first to pardon a turkey – but the Truman Library, where his papers are stored, says there’s no record of this. Dwight D. Eisenhower was given live turkeys when he was President, and for the first few years, they were used for his Thanksgiving dinner. But starting in 1957, the kitchen staff used frozen turkeys instead. (Maybe they just got tired of preparing live turkeys.) Still, a live turkey was taken to the White House each November, and the President, or his stand-in, posed for a picture with it.

President John F. Kennedy was given a live turkey in November 1963, shortly before he was killed. He said, “Let’s just keep him.” (Note: One source at the White House says this happened in 1961. However, the White House site also has a photo of the event, with a caption saying in happened in 1963.)

Now that the pardon is an annual event, the White House asks Americans to get involved. Each year, people can help choose the names of the two turkeys in an online poll. Some of the names have been: Liberty, Freedom, Biscuits, Gravy, Flyer, and Fryer.

Question by ggirlgail89: Who wants to start a dont free Paris Hilton petition?
It has come to my attention today that Paris and a friend started a petition that they want Governor Arnold to pardon her. They are trying to get people to sign it. I think it is a bunch of crap and she needs to serve her time just like any other American with less money and parents that don’t bail them out would. Drinking and driving is a serious offense and she needs to understand just how serious it is. SEND PARIS TO JAIL. Say it loud and proud here!
Thanks to the people who gave me the site to sign the circulating petition. I didn’t realize they had one. Doesn’t matter though, I am angry and a lot of people are and I want them to vent it right here. Don’t free Paris, dont free Paris, burn her at the stake, wait that is going too far, just kidding about the last part.

Thanksgiving Day Decorations and Turkeys, Turkeys, Turkeys

For a holiday that gifts us annually with a blend of family values, civics, and ecumenical spirituality, the decorations around Thanksgiving tend to come down to a few, very familiar, objects. Special plates, napkins, festive tablecloths, or any of the countless other forms of decorations used during this most uniquely American of holidays tend to feature autumn vegetation ranging from leaves to pumpkins, gourds, cornucopias filled with “plenty” and just one animal: the turkey. Whether we’re discussing retail items bought on sales or bulk wholesale Thanksgiving Day decorations, the large, tasty, ugly, and oddly lovable bird will always be a major player when it comes time to celebrate this most American family holiday.

Turkeys, of course, are inextricably bound up with our nation’s history, though some in Europe and elsewhere were actually consuming them well before the early American settlers who made them famous. Indeed, the name “turkey” comes from the fact that the birds were imported to Europe via the Ottoman Empire, which includes modern day Turkey. Nevertheless, it’s more than just legend that has the earliest settlers taught to hunt the local wild fowl by native Americans during the hard year of 1620-21 that led to the famed first Thanksgiving in Plymouth Massachusetts. Just to confuse matters, however, historians now believe the main dishes at that historic feast were likely goose and venison. (If things had gone slightly differently, would we now be featuring pictures of deer and geese in our Thanksgiving decorations?)

Nevertheless, the association in the public mind between the early settlers and turkeys grew a great deal in the public mind during the colonial era, to the point where founding father Benjamin Franklin famously argued in a letter to his daughter that, partly because of its importance to first Americans, the tasty fowl would be a far better candidate for the national bird than the eagle. (Franklin’s case for the turkey is memorialized in an amusing scene from the musical “1776”). By the time Abraham Lincoln made the growing custom of Thanksgiving a national holiday as the Civil War raged in 1863, it was probably only a matter of time before the holiday would become known by its popular present-day nickname, “Turkey Day.”

Even today, presidents traditionally pardon one of a number of turkeys brought to the White House, while the others supposedly end up on the holiday dinner table. This begs two questions. First, what capitol crimes the turkeys are supposed to have committed? Also what’s to be done in a year like this one, when the White House’s occupants include two animal-loving children?

And so we have turkeys on just about everything you can think of that might be associated with a holiday meal including plates, napkins, window clings, refrigerator magnets, articles of clothing, and more. We have silly cartoon turkeys and deadly serious fowl, realistic looking birds, and more abstract ones. As far as we know, Pablo Picasso never drew a Turkey, and so we’ve avoided cubist dinner fowl.

The fact of the matter is that both the retail and wholesale Thanksgiving Day decorations we know and love are as tied up with turkeys as they are with the colors of autumn. That applies equally to both cheap decorations and those that are on the pricier, non-closeout edge of the spectrum. When it comes to major holidays, we Americans tend to have a bit of a love affair with our largest source of Thanksgiving protein.

Thanksgiving in the USA

Thanksgiving in the U.S.A. is traditionally regarded as the feast commemorating the bonds of friendship forged between the English settlers in Massachusetts and the Native Americans upon their arrival, which was celebrated by a three day harvest festival in 1621. In 1941, the specification of the Thanksgiving date changed slightly when the U.S. Congress passed a bill requiring that Thanksgiving be on the fourth Thursday of November, which was signed into federal law on December 26th by Franklin D. Roosevelt.

While the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States enjoys the benefits of being a national holiday, and to many a religious ceremony, there are some traditions of Thanksgiving in the U.S.A. that have a wholly secular background, and seem to negate the original inspiration for the holiday, but are still observed.

An example of a glaring media instigated tradition of Thanksgiving in the U.S.A. is the annual turkey pardon. Since Harry Truman’s presidency in 1947, the annual tradition of the National Turkey Federation’s presenting the President of the United States with one live turkey for pardoning, has resulted with the releasing of the bird to the protected sanctuary of farm life. While some historians will claim to trace this tradition back to the presidency of Abraham Lincoln, there is no written documentation of this as fact.

Somehow, in the last few years, the number of turkeys has increased to two, citing the need for a backup pardon in case the original turkey is unavailable. With apologies to the Coalition for the Humane Treatment of Animals, which is a big promoter of this event, this is really a silly tradition, but somehow is continuing to be a popular sideline to the holiday season. Adding to the nonsense, in most recent years the public has been urged to vote online for names to give the two presidential turkeys. In 2003, the names were Stars and Stripes; in 2004, the names were Biscuit and Gravy; in 2005, Marshmallow and Yam; in 2006 Flyer and Fryer; and in 2007, May and Flower.

Starting in 2005, the two turkeys have been flown first class, by United Airlines, from Washington, D.C. to Disneyland near Los Angeles, California, where they are then honored as the Grand Marshals in the annual Main Street Thanksgiving Day Parade.

As families are struggling to stay together for the holidays, as budgets become tighter amid lost jobs and insecure futures, Thanksgiving in the U.S.A. includes sending two turkeys to Disneyland.

Obama Thanksgiving: US President Pardons Turkeys Liberty and Peace (Pictures)

In an annual presidential amnesty before Thanksgiving, US President Barack Obama has pardoned the official national Thanksgiving turkeys named Liberty and Peace which were chosen among 30 turkeys raised and groomed in Willmar, Minnesota in the National Thanksgiving Turkey. Among two birds, only Liberty enjoys the national spotlight during a brief ceremony at the North Portico on Wednesday morning. During the tradition, Obama made a priestly gesture over the bird before announcing: “You are hereby pardoned!”. Liberty and Peace are the fifth and sixth turkeys to skip the Thanksgiving feast during this administration. The action aims to remind us of both thankfulness and our elected officials’ power to decide between life and death. Obama said during the ceremony, “Well here’s another one: We can’t wait to pardon these turkeys. Literally!. Otherwise they’d wind up next to the mashed potatoes and stuffing”. Later on 23 November 2011, the First family delivered two not-so-lucky birds to the Capital Area Food Bank.
