What’s NOT mentioned is that 99.9% of the professional female bodybuilders supplement with steroids to develop superhuman muscles.

Weight training develops muscle tissue. Adding strength training will develop the underlying chest muscle on a woman and can add more shape to her upper body, creating those eye-pleasing and sexy curves. In addition, a good chest training program will add stunning high cleavage for that perfect fit in a dress or bikini.

To put it bluntly, the only way for a woman to lose her breast size is if she loses a lot of body fat.

Women and Weight Training Myth #3 – A woman’s muscle will turn into fat if she stops weight training.

BUSTED – There is an astronomical amount of women who won’t weight train for fear their muscle will somehow magically turn into fat if they stop weight training.

Again, muscle and fat are two completely different tissues responsible for their own functions. Muscle is metabolically active (calorie burning) and fat is metabolically inactive (fat storing).

Muscle CANNOT Ever, In Any Case, turn into fat any more than fat can turn into muscle. One can only build or lose muscle OR gain or lose fat. The two separate tissues are not interchangeable.

Women and Weight Training Myth #4 – Muscle weighs more than fat.

BUSTED – It’s no wonder women believe this ridicules statement. Dr. Phil has been known to say it in his highly publicized weight-loss book.

It’s a fact that a pound of muscle and a pound of fat weigh the same, a pound. What most women don’t realize is that a pound of muscle is denser and takes up less space than a pound of fat.

Hiring and Training of New Sales Staff

How do you train your sales personnel? Perhaps a better question would be…Do you train your sales personnel? As silly as this may sound a lot of organizations hire a salesperson and tell them to go get it. I have personally dealt with such an organization and this was considered the norm. Why? Because they have always done it this way! I suspect a lot of individuals have heard this comment from other organizations.

Past experience has shown me that the normal way a lot of small companies hire salespeople is by word of mouth or recommendation from a friend or customer. More times than not this method is flawed from the beginning. Depending upon your industry or product offering you may have experienced something like the following dialogue.

Question: “Do you know anyone you would recommend for a job”?

Answer: “Yeah, Joe has been with me forever and he needs to make more money and I cannot afford to pay him. He would be great for your job. OR

Question: I need to hire a new salesperson to call on your account and several others in this area. Do you know anyone who would be a good fit?

Answer: Why yes, my son (Daughter) is looking for a job and they know this business well. They will make a great salesperson.(Watch out for this landmine)

There are many more examples but hopefully, you get the picture. Why do we as business owners or managers spend so little time hiring the individuals who will represent us in the marketplace? Keep in mind I am not speaking of Fortune 500 organizations because companies in this arena spend a lot of money and hours interviewing and investigating. Small or medium sized businesses sometimes do not believe they have the time or money to recruit and hire properly. This is a tragic mistake.

The mistake is compounded when after hiring a warm body for the position the owner, sales manager or whoever is available may train the new employee for at least 2 days. Sometimes this training takes place in a distribution center where the new employee may be subjected to negative comments from various individuals. Perhaps if the new employee is lucky he will be placed with a marginal salesperson and told to ride around with him or her for a few days. The marginal salesperson is chosen because the top performers do not want to be bothered nor do they want to give away any “secrets.” The marginal salesperson knows all of the right language to use on a sales call and he will be everyone’s best friend. A lot of coffee may be consumed and a lot of the world’s problems may be solved but your products will not be sold and the new employee will learn quickly how to perform bad habits.

Should the new employee be astute enough to ask he or she may inquire as to sales manuals, product sheets, account information sheets etc. A typical organization will have some of these items but not all. New employees may receive all manner of explanations as to why the territory has not much available information. The employee may even be told that the lack of information and performance is the reason he was hired. He has to turn this train wreck around. Not wanting to appear timid the new salesperson will gather up as much bravado as possible and shout to the rooftops how he will be the savior for whom the company has been looking. All the while he may be thinking, what kind of mess have I gotten myself into?

The owner or sales manager most likely will sit back and wait for the rain to fall from the sky because this new salesperson told everyone he is the best thing since sliced bread and he will show the existing sales force how to make hay when the sun shines. ( Pardon the use of metaphors.) Reality will set in around the 60th day of employment when the new salesperson has done very little to earn his keep (with good reason) and the owner or manager will begin to get a little nervous. At this point the owner of my old company used to tell me to “put them on the get well program.” Translated this meant to reduce their draw from a living wage to starvation wages. This move usually achieved the desired result. The new salesperson quit and the process began anew. By the way, at this juncture the adage defining madness as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, needs to be stamped on a decision maker’s forehead.

During the recruitment and hiring phase I strongly recommend the owner and sales manager be left out of the initial interviews. This is important because the easiest person to sell is another salesperson and in the case of a lot of small companies, the owner and sales manager have usually carried most of the water with which to prime the pump of prosperity. Con artists and hucksters know exactly what buttons to push when dealing with this type of personality. More on recruiting and interviewing in the next installment.

I started this book and never finished. It was about someone on death row who received a presidential pardon. He was then taken out of the country and ended up in Italy where people were planning on killing him. I can’t remember the title or author.

Getting Back To Basics – Harassment Training

Every once in a while an article captures my attention, and a couple years ago, two articles, both with front page headlines, grabbed my attention. Being that the articles were written on the anniversary of the proclamation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, I had to write about these three things converging. I am writing now because it’s still an ongoing issue and the litigation continues….

The Globe and Mail headline of “Racial taunts cost Mounties $ 500,000” tells the story of Mr. Ali Tahmourpour’s failed attempt, in 1999, to become an RCMP officer. The other Globe headline of “Majority believes Canada coddles minorities” tells of a survey in which 61% of Canadians agree with the statement, “We make too many accommodations to visible minorities in Canada.”

With Canada’s 2006 census telling us 21% of Canada’s population is foreign born, and that in the previous 5 years 84% of immigrants came from non-European countries, I think we better put 2 and 2 together to come up with an equation to find a way of accommodating certain differences and to make sure people like Mr. Tahmourpour are free from discrimination.

Most people think you have to keep up with the latest in human rights and employment law to handle these problems. Others think they have to have their corporate lawyer on speed dial, just in case something new comes from a judge or adjudicator.

I say, just get back to basics, and in the case of the RCMP and Mr. Tahmourpour, it’s getting back to basics…training.

The federal human rights adjudicator gives us many examples where one or more officers, with authority, treated Tahmourpour and others differently, and negatively, due to their race, ethnicity or gender. One instructor even testified that he spoke to the officer in charge of the training depot, saying they might find themselves receiving a harassment or discrimination complaint if the head instructor didn’t change his ways. Even though the case has been appealed to the Federal Court and the Federal Court of Appeal, the government (RCMP) doesn’t dispute the discriminatory behaviour. They’re mostly trying to contain the run-away damages.

Because of the ruling, and subsequent appeals, Mr. Tahmourpour will be given a second chance to prove his worth as an RCMP officer. He may make it, or he may not. In fact evidence from a very credible corporal indicates she had grave doubts about the skills of Tahmourpour and this explained why he didn’t make it. But here’s what the adjudicator had to say to that:

“The problem with this explanation, however, is that in a training environment where derogatory comments about race are condoned and directed at people like Mr. Tahmourpour, where evaluations are inaccurate and improper, and where instructors take pride in being “politically incorrect”, it is difficult for someone like Mr. Tahmourpour to develop and demonstrate his skills in these areas. I find it reasonable to infer that such conditions erode one’s confidence and ability to perform well. Therefore, the Respondent’s explanation that Mr. Tahmourpour’s performance at Depot was weak is not satisfactory. Mr. Tahmourpour’s performance was more likely than not affected by the discrimination to which he was exposed.”

I will not pick on any workplace, and I certainly don’t want to pick on the RCMP, but it’s not every day an award comes from a human rights decision where the amount competes with lottery winnings. And in December 2006, British Columbia’s highest court upheld an award of $ 950,000 (plus interest and costs) in a civil suit for an RCMP officer in Merritt, British Columbia whose career was ruined by the harassment of her Sergeant.

If the case with Mr. Tahmourpour stands, the RCMP will not only have to fork out a lot of cash for lost wages and special damages, they will have three months to come up with a plan to ensure all candidates and officers are welcomed and free of discrimination. That’s a huge task, but one that really didn’t need any special measures or knowledge of the law.

Whether it’s the RCMP, or your workplace, you’ll never have to worry about big or small liabilities if you just get back to the basics. Here are three:

Put a stop to harassment

This seems so easy and yet harassment is alive and unwell in Canada at many workplaces every day. Some is done intentionally, while some is not. But talking about harassment, what it means, and how to address it, won’t cost you a penny. Seriously. Have a chat every month or so with employees and then address anything that smacks of harassment.

Stop trying to be an angel

You’re not and I’m not. Ok, we know we’re not perfect, but who wants to think of themselves as racist? Or sexist? Or homophobic? But we are – me included. I don’t want to be, but there are elements of my upbringing and the things that pop into my head which, if acted on, I’d be accused of being a bigot. So, I no longer worry about the stereotypes that I’ve been brought up with, and I no longer worry about the things that pop into my head.

The best I can do is ensure I don’t act on these things in any way. And if someone says I’m treating them differently due to their gender, or religion, or their colour of skin, I don’t invoke the old “…but all of my best friends are…” Instead I listen to what I’m being told and we can figure out if intentionally, or not, I’m doing something that may be causing some form of discrimination. It’s sometimes hard to hear, but you don’t need any new law to try to deal with it.

Be accommodating

Sure, for more complex issues, this may involve knowing a thing or two about the law, but for most accommodations, you don’t have to have taken even a grade 12 Law course. Be open to accommodating differences due to religion, culture, family status, or disability, for examples, and you’ll find the people asking for the accommodations will do what they can to be flexible. Despite the recent survey, most Canadians would be surprised how little accommodation is in fact needed in most workplaces.

I’m guessing there’s going to be more cases, more headlines and more problems to solve as our country heads down the path we’re going. It’s not always going to be easy. Get back to basics and you’ll never have to worry about me, or anyone else writing about you and your workplace.

Alberta’s finest, rcmp stop for tint. my buddy recorded his encounter with an rcmp policy enforcer for window tint. how about finding the person who vandalized my car instead of revenue generating, oh ya thats right cause there is no money in that. And exactly what authority do rcmp have to seize your license plate to have an excuse to tow your car. And what right do they have to tell you to turn off the camera, are they doing some thing illegal and don’t want evidence of it, only a criminal would not want his action recorded. I have no problem with peace officers but I have a big problem with revenue generating policy enforcers.

I will graduate with a CS degree in 2 years, and I would love to work with the RCMP or CSIS.

I can’t find specific jobs that you can apply for with a bachelor in CS on the RCMP website.. I can find some on the CSIS website though, but how hard is it to get the job? What do I need to know?

For any police force, including the RCMP, you start as a regular Officer for 3-5 years and then apply for special depts.

That degree is highly thought of by the RCMP when recruiting. Good luck.
(My brother was an RCMP Officer for 25 years. He had no regrets.)
