Women and Weight Training Myth #1 – Weight training will make woman huge and manly.

BUSTED – Like most people, when you think of women and weight training you automatically relate that image to the professional female bodybuilder strutting her oiled-up mammoth physique across stage and striking a pose.

What’s NOT mentioned is that 99.9% of the professional female bodybuilders supplement with steroids to develop superhuman muscles.

By the law of nature, women do not produce near the amount of muscle building hormone, testosterone, necessary to build huge swollen, vein-popping muscles. A woman is just not capable of building that type of massive muscle simply by lifting weights.

Bottom line: Weight training will NOT make a woman big and overly muscular.

Women and Weight Training Myth #2 – Women who weight train will lose their breast size.

BUSTED – (pardon the pun) Breast tissue is made up of primarily fat tissue. A loss of body fat will results in smaller breast size.

Weight training develops muscle tissue. Adding strength training will develop the underlying chest muscle on a woman and can add more shape to her upper body, creating those eye-pleasing and sexy curves. In addition, a good chest training program will add stunning high cleavage for that perfect fit in a dress or bikini.

To put it bluntly, the only way for a woman to lose her breast size is if she loses a lot of body fat.

Women and Weight Training Myth #3 – A woman’s muscle will turn into fat if she stops weight training.

BUSTED – There is an astronomical amount of women who won’t weight train for fear their muscle will somehow magically turn into fat if they stop weight training.

Again, muscle and fat are two completely different tissues responsible for their own functions. Muscle is metabolically active (calorie burning) and fat is metabolically inactive (fat storing).

Muscle CANNOT Ever, In Any Case, turn into fat any more than fat can turn into muscle. One can only build or lose muscle OR gain or lose fat. The two separate tissues are not interchangeable.

Women and Weight Training Myth #4 – Muscle weighs more than fat.

BUSTED – It’s no wonder women believe this ridicules statement. Dr. Phil has been known to say it in his highly publicized weight-loss book.

It’s a fact that a pound of muscle and a pound of fat weigh the same, a pound. What most women don’t realize is that a pound of muscle is denser and takes up less space than a pound of fat.

Therefore, having more developed muscle on the female frame with less body fat will make her leaner, tighter, and give off that “toned” look they are after.

Bottom line: Adding natural muscle mass through weight training accentuates a lady’s femininity.

Maintaining Your Weight Loss

In the previous article I mentioned five quick reminders in the hunt for a skinnier body whilst having fun getting there. Now we have that ‘dream body’ we love to show off we now need to keep it that way! I alluded to the fact in the earlier article that this is more difficult to achieve than losing the weight in the first place, and even though that seems illogical, I’ll explain.

Whenever we really make up our minds and stay on course we can achieve almost anything. We have a lot of intensity and focus going for us during these times. We make the tough decisions and stick it through, and we can do this for weeks and perhaps months. Eventually however, and this is pure human nature, we take our foot off the accelerator pedal. We become our own worst enemies. This is the classic situation for weight loss. How many people lose a stack of weight only to put it back on over the ensuing two to five years? Most people who lose weight do this.

The key is focus. Staying leaner takes an ongoing commitment to changed eating, exercise, and rest behavioral patterns. I’ll always maintain that a “one day at a time” approach to life, holistically, is the only way to go. This type of focus does not allow attention and passion to slip. It’s about never forgetting how poorly you felt physically when you were larger, or how embarrassed you felt in public or seeing your reflection in a mirror. If it makes you cringe that’s not a bad result. It’s a good sort of fear.

Here are some other things that are important to consider:

You did it! You lost the weight. See yourself as this lean person — make it your new body image. The old one no longer exists. Visualization is good. “See” yourself in your mind’s eye as lean and skinny.Don’t underestimate the power of your mind. Use it to stay focused and hungry (pardon the pun).If you make non-negotiable rules (e.g. don’t eat cake; don’t drink alcohol etc) stick to them 100 percent of the time.Focus on all the benefits you’ve reaped and not the things you’re missing. Stay grateful.Use your newfound knowledge and experience to help others with the same problem if you can.Continue to arm yourself with the truth. Get the right advice and read the right books. It also helps if you can build some sort of spiritual life.

Most of the work involved in maintaining the weight loss is mental — it depends largely on the power of the mind i.e. willpower. Invest in it. Get mentally tough. Don’t allow little slips to become the norm. Achieve mental toughness and you can achieve most things and you will be a very self-empowered individual.

What To Eat To Lose Weight

I`m fat. Well, I was till I found out what to eat to lose weight.The good news is we can both do something about it. Bear with me while I sink into a bit of history here. During the 80`s I was 20-30yo. I was very active in sports and my job was very manual. I was (and still are) 180cms (5ft 11in) and a well built 85kgs(185lbs). As a garbage collector during the day and my 3 day/week training regime for football I was very fit.

As I hit my 30`s I did notice my stomach getting bigger. Due to a combination of cutting my training down AND the implementation of automation in my job which did not require me to run behind a garbage truck anymore.

I left that job for a position in the hospitality industry as a manger of a pub. Now let me tell you, pub food & easy access to alcohol is not a good mix. The kilos piled on. I was oblivious to it of course. First I reached 90kgs, then 95. I stayed at 95kgs for the next 4 years and accepted this as my normal weight. After all, my Dad and a brother are both over 100kgs and genetics was my excuse for this.

I had toyed with the idea of putting in the effort to lose weight but the pain of doing it was greater than the gain. That was until I stepped on the scales a month ago out of curiosity and nearly fell over… 102kgs (225lbs). Do you have any idea what seeing 3 figures on a scale feels like. Maybe you do. It is gut wrenching (Pardon the pun).

My search was on. I scoured everywhere for a method to get my weight under 100kgs. I had to find out what to eat to lose weight Nothing,Until…I stumbled across a book. I downloaded it and read it and thought that it had merit. I did nothing about it till a week later when I read it again. This time the light came on. “I can do this” I thought. It is easy.

The strategies were a piece of cake ( I still eat cake too). The hardest part was NOT doing as it said. After 21 days of starting this I have lost 7.5kgs (17lb). I still have another 8kgs to lose. My goal weight is 87kgs.All the gurus tell me I should be 80 kgs for my height but that will not happen due to my frame and bone structure. I will be comfortable at 87kgs. I will re-access the situation then and decide if 2 or 3 more should come off.

Already my work colleagues have noticed not only the difference in my size but my demeanour has changed too. Energy is up ( my wife is happy),and I have noticed an improvement in my concentration & decision making.

Do you want to know the real bonus though? I still eat exactly what I ate before this. Here is a sample of what I have eaten the last 7 days.

Toast with butter and peanut butter
Chicken Parmigiani with vegies
Cream bun
Jam Tart
Coffee with sugar
Porterhouse Steak
Lollies ( I love ’em)
Toasted Sandwiches

All the things I have adored for years are still eaten.

There is one point I should mention. The book states that no strenuous exercise should be taken. Because of my still competitive nature I have hit the pavement 3 times a week. Nothing dramatic mind you. I hardly get a sweat up though. Actually, I nearly got arrested on one jog for loitering, that`s how slow I go.

Seriously folks, this is a cinch. That simple little book has changed my life for the better. All it did was guide me as to what to eat to lose weight.

Help Me Lose Weight, You Intrepid Explorer

Me: Pardon me, I wonder if you might help me lose weight?

I mean, you know what they say – whoever ‘they’ are: Two heads are better than one. Please. I really need the help.

Well, I admit that it’s quite impossible for you to literally help me lose weight. I mean, you are reading this in one part of the world, and I, well, who knows where I am.

But no problem, as the kids these days say. We’ll just pretend that you are an intrepid explorer. Furthermore, I think it would be cool if, as an explorer, you had some outdoorsy way to lose weight.

You: You know, I do enjoy the outdoors. OK, I’ll give it a try.

Me: Great! Thank you, thank you. So what do you have in mind to help me lose weight?

You: Have you ever tried rock climbing?

Me: Uh… er… hmmm…

You: Hey, wouldn’t you like to burn up 400 to 500 calories just by climbing a middle-sized rock? Plus, rock climbing can burn up to 380 calories in 30 minutes. (Kids, don’t try this at home.)

Actually, rock climbing gives you a double boost – one to your heart and lungs and another to your arms and legs. It is one of the top cardio exercises.

Here’s the deal: Take a moderate rock climb and add in a sensible diet and voila! You’ll be slim and trim in no time.

Me: Which means that all I really have to do is eat right and climb rocks?

You: You know, this might be a good place for a disclaimer.

(Important Disclaimer: Do not begin any rock climbing exercise program without first getting an OK from your doctor or medical professional.)

Me: Well, that reminds me. What if I’m seriously obese, or what if I’m 75 years old, or… OK, I’ll be honest. What if I’m an exercise wimp? I’m not sure that rock climbing is exactly what I had in mind.

You: But hey, I have a bonus for you.

Me: A bonus?

You: I am serious. Even if you have an aversion to exercising, you’ll love rock climbing. It’s fun. Trust me.

Me: That’s a bonus?

You: The fun. The fun is the bonus.

Me: Well, I’m sure rock climbing is fun, but…

You: Also, here are some tips.

Me: What tips?

You: No matter what your rock climbing skill is, whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned veteran, scaling the side of a rock means your body will have to have the proper fuel. Which is to say, the proper food plus water.

No-no No. 1: Never, never, never go rock climbing on an empty stomach. Ever.

Why? It’s just common sense. Rock climbing requires your complete attention every second you’re scaling the side of that rock. Giving that attention instead to feelings of hunger and/or thirst can lead to injury.

Your whole body needs to be adequately fortified, which means you need ample:

• Roughage. Make sure you get plenty of dietary fiber in the 24 hours before your climb.

• Protein. Cold-water fish such as salmon and tuna are excellent sources of protein. Avocados and nuts are ideal pre-climb snacks.

Me: I appreciate the suggestions, but can’t I follow them without, you know, climbing rocks?

You: Plus, let’s be clear. Whole wheat bread, not white. Fresh fruit, not canned. For the love of Mike, please save the canned fruit for the next tornado or alien attack or whatever natural disaster.

All right, I’ll admit that canned fruit and white bread can give your body a certain, albeit low, amount of energy. What we are trying to avoid, however, is an emergency call of nature when we’re halfway up a 100-foot rock.

And oh by the way, no soda pop or coffee before a rock climb. They’re diuretics, and we don’t want a bladder attack while rock climbing (I don’t really have to add alcohol to the list of no-nos, do I?) Just use common sense.

Now, for water:

Make absolutely sure you have easy access to drinking water at all times. You simply can’t afford to be anything less than fully hydrated when you are rock climbing.

You should know that rock climbing can make you sweat like a horse.

Me: I’m beginning to sweat already, thinking that maybe I asked the wrong person to help me lose weight.

You: And if you let yourself become dehydrated, you run the risk of becoming weak, even faint, and you could easily suffer a loss of concentration. That is not a good condition for a rock climber to be in.

Me: First I was sweating. Now I’m feeling faint.

You: Also, you don’t want to let yourself get overheated. So, to repeat Water Rule No. 1, just make sure you have easy access to drinking water before you climb, while you are climbing, and after your climb, when you are standing on a rocky peak and celebrating your weight loss – and your grand accomplishment.

Me (after a pause): You’re good. I have to hand it to you. I can see how you could help me lose weight.

However… rock climbing just isn’t the answer. Not for me. Not now. Not ever. Can you help me lose weight please some other way?

You: Of course. I know quite a number of rather wonderful and very effective ways, actually. Starting right now, if you’d like.

Me: Really? You’re kidding! You can help me lose weight right now!?

You: Absolutely.

Me: No kidding? No rock climbing or anything like that?

You: No, nothing like rock climbing at all. That’s a promise.

Me (smiling): What a nice man. (beat) Woman. (beat) Intrepid explorer. (beat) Whatever.

Scooter Libby is going to get pardoned for breaking the law by the very person who told him to do it. I don’t see how pardoning is a good thing. It puts people above the law.
I didn’t ask where it is defined in the law, I know it’s in the Consitution. I just wondered why they would have done that, particularly in light of how much they despised King George. It seems counter to every other ideology defined there.

Pardons and clemency in the United States

In the United States, the pardon power is granted to the President by the United States Constitution, Art. II, Sec. 2, which states that the President:

shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment.

All federal pardon petitions are addressed to the President who grants or denies the request. Typically, applications for pardons are referred for review and non-binding recommendation by the Office of the Pardon Attorney, an official of the Department of Justice. Since 1977, presidents have received about 600 pardon or clemency petitions a year and have granted around ten percent of these, although the percentage of pardons and repieves granted varies from administration to administration (fewer pardons have been granted since World War II than historically had been the case). In order for a pardon to be granted, those who are pardoned usually must admit guilt.

The presidential power of pardons and commutations was controversial from the outset; many Anti-Federalists remembered examples of royal abuses of the pardon power in Europe, and warned that the same would happen in the new republic. The Federalist Papers includes a strong defense of the pardon power. President George Washington granted the first Federal pardons to leaders of the Whiskey Rebellion.

Many pardons have been controversial; critics argue that pardons have been used more often for the sake of political expediency than to correct judicial error. Perhaps the most famous U.S. pardon in history was granted by President Gerald Ford to former President Richard Nixon on September 8, 1974 for official misconduct which gave rise to the Watergate scandal. Polls showed that the majority of American citizens strongly disapproved of this pardon at the time. Ford’s public-approval ratings tumbled after he pardoned Nixon, and he was narrowly defeated in the presidential campaign two years later. Other controversial uses of the pardon power include Andrew Johnson’s sweeping pardons of thousands of former Confederate officials and military personnel after the American Civil War, Jimmy Carter’s grant of amnesty to Vietnam-era draft evaders, George H. W. Bush’s pardons of six Reagan administration officials accused and/or convicted in connection with the Iran-Contra affair, and Bill Clinton’s pardons of convicted FALN terrorists and 140 people on his last day in office.

A presidential pardon may be granted at any time after commission of the offense; the pardoned person need not have been convicted or even formally charged with a crime. In the overwhelming majority of cases, however, the Pardon Attorney will only consider petitions from persons who have completed their sentences and, in addition, have demonstrated their ability to lead a responsible and productive life for a significant period after conviction or release from confinement. Federal courts have held that the President may make a pardon or reprieve conditional, and that a person who is granted such a pardon or reprieve cannot refuse it, but must accept and comply with its conditions.

The pardon power of the President extends only to offenses cognizable under Federal law. However, the governors of most states have the power to grant pardons or reprieves for offenses under state criminal law. In other states, that power is committed to an appointed agency or board, or to a board and the governor in some hybrid arrangement.

The Basics of Losing Weight – Part IV – Mindset

This week on “The Basics of Weight Loss” we’ve got what I consider the most important aspect. I was going to have part IV be about weight lifting routines, but I wanted to get mindset done because it is that important.

There are different levels to being in the right frame of mind. You have to be in the right frame of mind for your whole plan. You have to be in the right frame of mind for your time in the gym. You have to be in the right frame of mind for the exercise you’re currently doing.

When it comes to fat loss someone once told me “Remember its not a sprint, its a marathon.” This is important because I know people that try to do too much at first, then they don’t see results they give up. That’s the sprint.

The marathon is when you keep at it, keep at it. Make good decisions that you can stick to. Read my articles on BMR and Macro-Nutrients to help find a starting point for those decisions. Make little changes at first, the marathon can last a lifetime in some people so changes that you can stick to in the long run are the ones that will help you take the fat off and keep it off.

This is one of the reasons I go ballistic when I see an infomercial about weight loss, or I see something on the morning news about this new amazing product or pill that will take fat off of you. It messes with your mindset. Everyone has the power to change themselves, but infomercials and shows not only give bad information they reinforce the notion that weight loss is too hard to do on your own or without a magic pill or surgery. Thats bullshit, pardon my language, but that’s why mindset is so important. If you don’t believe in it it wont happen. BELIEVE!

Also you have to have short term mindset. This is when you’re working out in the gym. You have to set you focus for each rep. Don’t let yourself get distracted while you lift or you could injure yourself. You really want to bring your A game while you’re working out.
