The Huge Controversy Surrounding Mixed Breed Or Hybrid Dogs

I did not realize that discussions surrounding designer / mixed breed / hybrid dogs were so controversial. In a few dog forums, I mentioned that my pup was a Cockapoo born in Missouri and immediately the fur began to fly (pardon my attempt at humor). For some people, “designer dog” is associated with puppy mills and haphazard breeding practices.

Forum Comments Here’s a sampling of the indignation generated by the words “designer or hybrid dogs.” CFM represents comments from forum members. MR represents my responses to these comments.

CFM: “Make a mongrel and stick a “designer” tag on it, and people will spend a big heap of money on one.”MR: Ouch!

CFM:”I just hate people breeding “designer” dogs while others die due to lack of homes.”MR: It’s not okay to breed dogs for certain desirable characteristics? Hasn’t that been the practice for centuries?

CFM: “Designer puppies are what a great number of puppy mills produce. Because of our temperate climate Missouri is a hot bed of them.”

MR: Is this a fact – “most puppy mills produce hybrid dogs?” Where are the statistics?

CFM: “I myself and me have a problem with this type of breeding because of the trail of horror it involves and I find it very hard not to speak out. (Your pup) is beautiful. There is no doubt about that. I will always have a problem with encouraging the practices that produced him.”MR: Then you must condemn all dog breeders!

CFM: “Only ignorant people will buy a puppy from a designer dog breeder.”

MR: Guess I’ve been labeled with a lot worse terms, but it did sting, especially coming from an invisible person hiding behind a dog forum post!

Consider These Points Let’s get practical – if you are looking for certain traits in a pet and found them in hybrid dogs, what’s the problem with getting one? How come people don’t give natural parents such a hard time? They’ve decided to have their own kid in their own images and do not adopt a child despite the fact so many kids need to be adopted.

This “designer dog” controversy is pure and simple discrimination. I was reminded of that when I asked dog forum members to vote for Alvin in a pet photo contest. One forum member replied, “No, I won’t vote for a designer dog.”

So okay, will you not vote for a black man running for office because he’s black?

A Final Thought Granted, those who oppose the breeding of hybrid dogs are entitled to their opinions. But attacking those who oppose your beliefs can sometimes become fanatical. Case in point – several forum members reading my posts harassed a Cockapoo dog breeder to the point where she finally called the police.

Should I not buy another Cockapoo because these fanatics might come after me?

Whoops – too late – bought another Cockapoo puppy 4 months after the first one. They’re really wonderful pets!
