Article by Naveen Marasinghe

Inspired by the architecture of numerous other nations, the Vidhan Soudha is not only an impressive building in Bangalore but in the whole of India as well. Featuring a striking Neo Dravidian style that conveys grandeur and an imposing image the building is a sight that should definitely not be missed.

Being one of the most famous structures in the local area it has come to earn the name as being the Taj Mahal of Southern India. Besides its obvious architectural and symbolic purposes the building also has a very real and practical use; it is the seat of Karnataka’s Legislative Assembly and is the largest legislative building in India.

The building was originally conceived by Kengal Hanumanthaiah who was at the time the Chief Minister of Mysore. The idea for the structure came to him after he visited several nations including several in Europe, The United States and Russia. Built entirely out of granite and porphyry, Vidhan Soudha is home to a gargantuan three hundred rooms which helps convey the structure true immensity.

Inspiring and majestic the structure serves as a proud symbol of Indian Sovereignty. The foundation stone was laid out by Jawaharalal Nehru in 1952 and construction to a total of 4 years. During this time various problems were encountered by those supporting the project including a rising cost of production. Due to a shortage of labour the numerous prisoners were used to construct the structure. Upon completion these prisoners were then pardoned and set free.

In addition to its fine exterior, Vidhan Soudha features interiors that are equally impressive and radiates a grand and imposing effect that leaves onlookers with a feeling of true awe.

The building itself can be accessed from all four directions though admission to the structure is controlled and permission must be obtained in advance before visiting. One thing is for certain, that a sightseeing trip of Bangalore would be incomplete without a visit to the Vidhan Soudha.

Staying in a Bangalore hotel located close to this destination such as The Gateway Hotel provides guests with convenient access tot his destination and numerous others in the area.
