Do you read the labels on the foods you buy in the supermarket? I do. As often as not it is like reading a really bad joke. I saw a woman in the store reading the label on a diet product and I said, “excuse me, I was looking at that and I am not sure how to understand the nutritional guide on the side”. “What does all of that mean?” She sort of smiled and said “Hell, I don’t know, but it doesn’t seem to have much fat in it and I am trying to cut down on my fat; I want to lose some weight.”To be politically correct, this woman was definitely a plus size woman who hadn’t seen a size 12 in many years. I had to smile when I looked in her shopping cart and realized that this one product was her only concession to an otherwise horrendous selection of foods. Now in all fairness, she may not have yet been to the produce aisle, but there wasn’t enough room left in her cart for a head of ice berg lettuce. She didn’t seem to have even a glancing relationship with nutritional values. Maybe she believes that if she eats a lot of preservatives that she will live longer. How is that for logic? If it makes the food last longer, then……Well you can see where this is going. Let’s be perfectly clear here. Low fat does not mean healthy and often times the fat is replaced with sugar and you can call it high fructose corn syrup, barley malt, cane-juice crystals, caramel, dextrose, dextrin, diastatic malt, glucose, honey, mannitol, sorbitol or any of a couple dozen other names until the cows come home but to quote a diet guru, “a monosaccharide is a monosaccharide is a monosaccharide. In other words, a sugar is a sugar and can cause almost as many health problems as fat. Now going back to preservatives; they are not good for the body, period. Someone once reported that “Soft Cookies” actually contained an edible form of plastic to maintain softness and extend shelf life. True or not I have not eaten a soft packaged cookie in a very long time. I mean even I have my limits and I will eat almost anything. The difference is I do so with my eyes open.Actually, where all this is leading is to find a way to lose weight and get healthier without all the rigors of dealing with fresh food and the time required to prepare them for balanced nutrition.
